Why form a new committee within the United Nations and ECOSOC?

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations’ central platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development.

In light of its eminent coordinating role at the center of the UN system, of its capacity to formulate impactful policy recommendations to UN Member States, and of its proven holistic perspective on the major issues of our time, ECOSOC stands out as the one forum where a new global debate on rare diseases and their numerous economic and social dimensions must take place, and the one hub through which to create the opportunity to enable other UN bodies and agencies of relevance to understand how rare diseases relate to their own priorities and initiatives.

It is therefore, by essence, the one forum where a new global debate on rare diseases and their numerous economic and social dimensions must take place. For the members of the NGO Committee for Rare Diseases, ECOSOC represents the one hub through which to enable other UN bodies and agencies to understand how rare diseases relate to their own priorities and initiatives.
